![]() The charts are masterpieces of information graphics, but were devised long before the term was invented. Intended to show ‘the history of the American Negro, his present condition, his education and his literature’ they resemble spectacular modernist paintings. Du Bois were the most important discovery. Julian writes: “In my research for the book these hand-drawn charts from 1900, devised by the African-American sociologist and activist W.E.B. I’m astonished by the sheer diversity of the charts: the dynamic way in which the diagrams reflect different kinds of information: statistical data becomes image, becomes information. The second thing is their extraordinary effectiveness as infographics: so much information conveyed with a visual economy and graphic clarity. They are like constructivist paintings executed in startlingly vivid and marvellously coordinated colour. It was marketed as the font of our time, and also as the font of the future. Futura is a versatile, sans-serif typeface with strong readability. The wood type gave Hintz and Omagari a variey to alternate characters to include that soften the first impression of a more serious character. “It felt like we should pay Plak more tribute,” says Hintz, “The forms themselves are partly quirky, partly really fun, but with a German stiffness that makes for a strange mix.” Given the trend for mechanical sans serif designs on the web, Neue Plak is well-suited to web use and digital interfaces. In this project, we were each assigned to do research on a typeface and get to know them better by compiling a list of adjectives that describe the typeface.
